Before the modern concept of “Airbnbs” and “Vrbos” – before the automobile driven creation of “motels” – and even before the 19th Century idea of grand “hotels” – there were “Inns”. These smaller, conveniently located places of hospitality were often a part of a private residence, one large enough to securely provide a sense of private space for weary travelers.
Once in decline across America during the 20th Century, Inns have made a valiant comeback in our modern world. As in any historic region of America, there is an abundance of these beautiful lodging options in the Finger Lakes, many located in truly historic former private residences.
Here is our list of the best of these wonderful places of respite.
LAURENTIDE INN – Penn Yan

The majestic presence of Laurentide Inn’s early 19th Century residence.
The words historic and elegance don’t always come together, but they most certainly do at this incredible bed & breakfast style inn that can be found in the direct center of the Finger Lakes region.
LOCATION: This lovely lodging opportunity is on the main thoroughfare of Penn Yan, and within walking distance of downtown, at 158 Main Street (NYS Route 54). This is a beautiful section of this Finger Lakes village with great walking opportunities and several fun businesses for your shopping and dining pleasure (including right in the back yard!)
HISTORY: This stately inn has recently celebrated its bi-centennial (built in 1820) and history oozes from both outside and inside perspectives. However, well thought out renovations make the word “historic” a complimentary charming attribute, rather than a simple chronological reference. For most of this history, the current inn was a family residence for several succeeding prominent local families. In the late 20th century the building became a Bed & Breakfast business for several years, until undergoing the meticulous renovations to allow the current inn to open in time for the 2019 New Year.
WHY YOU WANT TO STAY HERE: Because you want to go home from your Finger Lakes vacation and be able to say to your best friend, “Oh my, we stayed at the most amazing place!” There are 5 uniquely styled guest rooms within the inn itself, along with a carriage house loft on the property. Have a large gathering? Book the entire inn, including personal chef services!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: In addition to these gorgeous lodging options, the owners have recently added two other outstanding Finger Lakes venues, and they are each right on the property! In the aforementioned carriage house is The Laurentide Beer Company, featuring a great selection of their own craft beer, along with other drinking options, in one of the truly great parklike settings of the Finger Lakes. And if you get hungry, we welcome one of the newest dining options in the area – True Roots Kitchen – featuring an eclectic menu of delicious offerings in a fun dining setting with plenty of community parking. You’ll often find live music and a fun crowd supporting both. Look for our written reviews for each to come soon!
